Hi,
The method before SSB was to FSK (Frequency Shift Key) You had a capacitor
that "pulled" the TX crystal, and it had a trimmer in parallel to precisely
adjust the shift, which is 200 Hz. The switching was done by diodes, and
most RTTY boxes had both AFSK (for SSB) and "real" FSK for legacy equipment.
