Mic inputs on many sound cards are turned off in software by default; else=
=20
recording audio from CD's or other sources would include room noise. Your=20
laptop probably has mics in the surface of the top, look for the tiny=20
little grill or grating or slot. Plugging in something at the mic jack=20
would disable built in jacks in favor of an external one, probably, but as=
=20
I say, all of the above are usually turned off.

Step 1: In WinXP, double click the speaker icon in the system tray (down=20
near the clock) and click Options, Properties,

Step 1a: Click "Adjust Volume For", "Recording". Click Ok.

Step 2: Now look for a slider for Microphone. Adjust the volume upward a=20
little. Does it have a checkbox for Select? or one for Mute? If the former,=
=20
it would want to be checked, if the later, unchecked.

If you want to just monitor the signal instead of passing it to a recording=
=20
program, perhaps in step 1a click "Adjust Volume For" "Playback"
