I was amazed at how well low power will work. Our local radio guru we call "the Professer" told me that when 6 is open 10 watts is plenty and when it's closed 1 kw ain't enough. At that time I was running a borrowed Kenwood TS-600 that dead keyed 8 to 10 watts and a 100 watt brick with a 3 ele beam at 20'. I started out useing the brick but after awhile it was more fun seeing how far I could get without it. From Augusta,GA to California and also to Canada. It was much more exciting and challenging without the amp.Would I have made more contacts with the amp? Probably. But it was much more fun without it. Hopefully I will be back on 6 shortly. I got a new radio, an FT-650 and am in the process of getting a 50' tower.I can't wait!
