I think it is a thermistor, since that's what is left looks like, but I can't find it in my book. Can anyone tell me what it is and what the best value should be? I appreciate any info.

This is actually a soft-start component to limit inrush current on startup - I ordered replacements from DigiKey years ago when I restored mine - I believe they were called Surgistors, and you'll have to check the catalog to see if they're still there. They have higher resistance on startup, then their resistance goes down. I got one of the larger values.
You could probably just bypass it, but the switch contacts would arc and burn out earlier. In my case, the switch was already shot so that wasn't a concern.
