Joachim:  Thank you very much for your reply and your suggestions.  I had
not thought to check for shorts in the 8072 or the nixie board.  Thank you
for the advice, I will do so.  It was suggested to me that it might be the
transformer.  I am studying the schematic to figure out how I could check it
out.  I tested the filter caps and so far there is no short in any of them.

unfortunately can't help you with parts. But have you thought about checking
the 8072 or the Nixie counter board for shorts before you stuff the box with
new components?
