Howdy.

Thirty something years after I first slobbered on my QST at the site of a
CX-7, one finally followed me home from a local hamfest, guaranteed not to
work, for less than the price of an HW-100. About my most exciting hamfest
find since E-Bay began.

Not that it bears much resemblance to the CX-7A it started out as. Homebuilt
green LED display, homebuilt (I think to CX-7B spec) power supply, 4CX250
final with outboard fan and filament transformer, and a few mods that took
some deciphering, but it's generating 170 watts of RF and seems to be fully
functional after only moderate aggravation. But I do have a dozen questions
or so if anyone would care to take a stab at 'em......

this one is SN 0779720272 - can that number be deconstructed into anything
meaningful?

Has anyone seen documentation for the 8072 to 4CX250 conversion?

What's the difference between a Thomas manual and the original - I've got an
original, but curious how the two manuals flange up and how they compare to
the SN.

Anybody with a junk box have a "Spot" knob for sale? It's the only
non-original knob on my radio,

The website mentioned in the archives is really impressive, but I can't seem
to open several things listed (it says not available) is the CD project still
a ways off?

Could the dark brown, extremely epoxy-like glossy paint possibly be original
(or for that matter available)? I'm sure its been repainted, and the only
time I operated thought the paint was duller and more textured, but then that
was a long, long time ago,,,,

What is the easy way to extricate the radio from the cabinet, I've already
discovered the three hardest ways .......

There is a bit of audio distortion that seems to be AGC related - its not a
popping kind of attack thing, but more of a ripping kind of sound anytime a
signal kicks up the AVC - if the RF gain is backed down it goes away - and it
takes a few minutes after initially applying power for the problem to show
up. It's not really objectionable, but if there are any likely suspect
AGC-related components that are known culprits, I'd love to know - or should
I leave well enough alone now that its generally functional?

Has anyone tried to put one of these on 17 meters? Without sacrificing 20 or
15?

Apologizing in advance for my boyish excitement, but I'm havinga ball, and
was excited to track down the list (K5MBX got me looking for it after we
worked earlier today)............

Thanks, Scott
