"I think there has to be a better way than taking them away from their natural lands".

That's Sheryl Crow talking about the proposed roundup of 25,000 wild horses by BLM.

Actually, Sheryl might find Nevada ranchers (100% would be the guess) willing to show her, if she'd bother to leave her Wilshire Blvd address for awhile, why her "think" needs adjusting. The rancher is really caught in this. On one hand, cattle allotments being cut by BLM and, on the other, the wild horse count keeps increasing, browsing the land set aside for our next T-bone. Rock and a hard place!

Believe this?: the Sierra Club supports herd reduction, stating that a mustang will consume 26 pounds of forage a day, thereby "ensuring the loss of wildlife diversity and populations". Strange bedfellows, eh?

Some claim those Mustangs are really just feral critters, cut loose by cash distressed owners over many years. Probably something to that, considering the count increase in the last couple years of our recession.

Might be we can gain some insights on the subject during our next SIERA general meeting. Our "program" is Dan Jacquet, BLM specialist. Dan has a fine program and he'll be prepared to answer questions.

We'll have a short business meeting too, looking for your ideas and giving you some thoughts about what SIERA has to offer in the future.

SATURDAY, February 6th.

The Methodist Church at 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville.
