I got this from Otto, and thought it would be good to pass on.. Good
information.
Mornin' John;
Fancy meeting you this week!
If that generator has not been tested recently, today is the day. If you
think the gas in it is good, dump it in the car and buy fresh for the
generator. Don't think it is fresh enough for the car? Then put fresh in the
generator. When was the last oil change? Do it now if you don't know. At
least check the oil level!
Also identify ALL radio cables today. Can you charge that HT directly from a
battery? Identify the cable. Do you have a cigarette lighter cable? Where is
it? While your at it, plug in the wall wart and charge all the batteries.
Where is the instruction book? Can you change freqs and PL's easily without
the manual or are you like everyone else and think you have it all in
memories and don't have a clue how to reprogram them on the fly? Have
antenna adapters for any type of coax you might find.
Message grams? Print at least 10 (front and back). That probably won't be
nearly enough if needed but at least you will have 20 forms to use before
you have to do it 'freestyle'.
Packet? Have a TNC but never fired it up? Today is the day. Long into your
local BBS and get past the log in screen so that you don't have to do it in
a hurry. Don't be silly. When it asked for your name, type you name. When it
asks for your zip code, type your zip code. The SYSOP just wants to know who
he is talking to and the zip code is used to route NTS traffic if required.
Send a message to the SYSOP saying hello. Most BBS's in the local area are
capable of handling several hundred NTS messages an hour. Bet you don't even
know who your voice NTS operators are! Today is the day to find out.
