This morning, I went to work, thinking about the upcoming pass being made by
the International Space Station around 10:30 AM. The students at McQueen
High school had scheduled communications with the commander of the ISS.
Around 1030, I tuned my mobile to 145.800 and opened the squelch. A short
time later, I heard a very strong and clear signal from the ISS commander,
answering the questions from the high school students. (I adjusted the
squelch for normal operation as I had an S8 signal.) I was pleasantly
surprised and excited as well. All this time I thought you had to have
tracking antennas, and high end equipment to hear amateur satellite radio
signals...an old ICOM mobile and a 5/8 mag mount worked. I am looking
forward to learning more about Amateur Satellite Radio.
The Hams and teachers did an outstanding job of setting up this event for
the students at McQueen. The amount of dedication, time and energy to make
this a success is to be commended.
