Special Weather Statement
401 am PST Mon Dec 26 2005

...Series of strong Pacific storms expected to hit the Sierra and
western Nevada through new years weekend...

The next strong Pacific storm will reach the northern Sierra by
Tuesday afternoon and end by Wednesday afternoon. Snow levels will
rise to 7500 to 8000 feet on Tuesday evening before dropping
rapidly as a strong cold front moves through the area. Periods of
moderate to heavy rain are likely Tuesday afternoon and evening.
This will combine with some melting snow and saturated soils to cause
rises on small creeks and streams...and potentially create rock
slides near steep terrain.

On Wednesday snow levels will drop to near valley floors north of
Interstate 80...and drop to 5000 to 5500 feet south of Highway 50.
Strong gusty winds will accompany this storm with winds gusts near
100 mph over the Sierra ridges and gusts to 50 mph in the western
Nevada valleys. Significant snowfall accumulations are likely in
the Sierra.

Additional Pacific storms are expected to reach the Sierra and
western Nevada on December 30th...and January 2nd. Long range
models indicate this moist and fast moving pattern may not break
until after the first week of January. Each of these storms has the
potential to produce significant precipitation amounts and strong
gusty winds.

Expires:270000 gmt
