Greetings to everyone in the Nevada Section!
This year's expanded two-day emergency communications symposium
EMCOMMWEST 2004 is being combined with the Reno Spring Ham Swap for a
full weekend May 22-23. A half-dozen northern clubs are all pulling
together to make EMCOMMWEST 2004 a top-notch regional event. Check
http://www.emcommwest.org for on-line registration and the latest
information.
The annual National Association of Broadcasters (NAB)
<http://www.nab.org> conference was held in Las Vegas the week of April
19-23 and ARRL had a booth right in the thick of things near the main
entrance. In addition to ARRL President Jim Haney W5JBP <w5jbp at arrl.org>
and ARRL Pacific Division Director Bob Vallio W6RGG <w6rgg at arrl.org>, I
spent a few days meeting and visiting with as many of you as I could.
During the short time I was in Las Vegas for the NAB convention, I had a
chance to sit down with Assistant Section Manager Gary Hartman KK7LV
<kk7lv at arrl.net>, Technical Coordinator Kent Johnson W7AOR
<w7aor at narri.org>, Official Observer Coordinator Tim Hunt WA6TNW
<wa6tnw at arrl.net> and Southern District Emergency Coordinator Glenn Hale
KB7REO <gshale1 at intermind.net>. Tim had a long way to travel, but we
all appreciated his being able to join us.
The next night we had a special get-together at the Instant Replay
sports bar just south of town where in addition to extended
presentations by Jim Haney W5JBP and Bob Vallio W6RGG, a very special
Certificate Of Appreciation was presented to Clark County Emergency
Coordinator Charlie Kunz AA5QJ <aa5qj at arrl.net>. After years of selfless
dedication including a recent meeting with Director of Homeland Security
Tom Ridge, Charlie has earned the thanks and gratitude of all of us.
Section Traffic Manager Matt Parker N7TOD <n7tod at arrl.net> reports that
during the second quarter of 2004 he began a renewed effort to further
expand NTS activities within the section, bringing in more participation
in this service and further solidifying NTS interface with section ARES
activities. The increase in traffic net activity is a good indicator
that Matt's work is starting to pay off.
The Sierra Intermountain Emergency Radio Association (SIERA)
<http://www.siera-amateur-radio.org> is gearing up for another three-day
Pony Express re-ride from the afternoon of June 2 through the early
morning hours of June 5. Volunteer are always welcome and anyone
interested should contact Will Lewis KD7NIR <kd7nir at arrl.net>.
Speaking of SIERA, they will be joining the Tahoe Amateur Radio
Association (TARA) <http://www.wa6ewv.com/tarahome.htm> for Field Day at
Lake Tahoe this year. Another cooperative effort will be between the
Carson Valley Radio Club (CVRC) <http://www.cvrc.net> and the Lyon
County ARES group who will be getting together at the Dayton State Park
just south of Dayton. Cooperative club Field Day efforts are becoming
more and more popular throughout the section.
For a current list of all ARRL Nevada Section Field Appointments, you
can always check http://www.pdarrl.org/nevsec/officers.html.
Please send me your concerns, opinions, questions and newsletters. Until
next month,
73, Dick K7VC <k7vc at arrl.org>
Nevada Section Manager
