Special Weather Statement
249 PM PST Fri Dec 24 2004
...A couple of storm systems from the Gulf of Alaska to affect the
Sierra and western Nevada between Sunday and new years...
The first storm system is expected to drop southward from off the
Oregon coast Sunday to off the central California coast by Monday
afternoon. The storm will rotate off of the California coast into
Wednesday...with intermittent periods of snow expected in the
Sierra. At this time...the most significant snowfall is expected
south of Lake Tahoe. As the storm ejects inland Tuesday night and
Wednesday...some accumulating snow above 5000 feet may spill over in
western Nevada.
The second...much more potent storm is likely to affect the region
starting Thursday. This very cold storm system is projected to slowly
move down the Pacific northwest coast through Friday. This storm is
likely to produce very significant snowfall in the Sierra...and has
the potential to produce large snow accumulations in western Nevada
valleys as well.
Persons planning travel in the Sierra or western Nevada from Sunday
night through next week...especially Tuesday through Friday...should
stay alert for the latest forecasts and be prepared for winter
driving conditions. Check NOAA Weather Radio...the internet or your
local news source for the latest updates to these developing winter
weather systems.
