This is to determine interest.......

It may be possible to schedule a guided mine tour of the facilities of =
Newmont Mining Corp.=20

Newmont has several operations just off I-80 between Winnemucca and =
Carlin, making this area the largest gold producer in the U.S. They =
have 14 open pit and 5 underground mines and own or control 3,056 miles =
of land along this corridor. Newmont's operations are quite efficient =
and, perhaps, the most efficient (and, thus, most profitable) in the =
world.

You may have read recent articles concerning Newmont's efforts to =
develop another huge open pit mine in the area, substantially adding to =
employment and the wealth of Nevada. As you might also expect, the =
environmental community (mostly back East types) are up in arms and =
wringing their hands.

A reasonable life for a gold mine is more or less seven years, =
explaining why development becomes a progressive type operation, rather =
than just going in to the whole area and tapping it out.

The local predecessor company of Newmont (Anglo-American) was relatively =
easy to communicate with and had an office in Reno. Newmont is =
headquartered in Denver, but the local operations are still somewhat =
autonomous. So, once we ferret through the maze, we may well be able to =
get a educational and most enjoyable tour.

If you've not toured a large open pit mining operation (copper, iron =
ore, gold, etc) it's an eye opening experience.

Before starting to investigate the possibilities, I'd like to know if =
SIERA members (and their friends) have enough interest to make the =
venture worthwhile.

We'd probably have to schedule the tour during the week (in order to see =
the total operation in all its glory) and it sure will be a full day =
project. Probably best to consider carpool of people as well as costs - =
unless, of course, we get enough interest to investigate a small bus. =
But I won't get into the logistics until we fashion an interest =
platform.

If you (and yours) have a basic interest in such an adventure for SIERA, =
please let me know. I'll see what can be cobbled together.
