Most of the trouble with all drives in tape decks are worn drive wheel (rubber) idle arms (rubber) and belts that get dry and hard. Cleaning the rubber and all guides and adjust idle arm springs will help as long there is no flat spots on the rubber surfaces. I worked on most office equipment over the years and have had my share of dirty reel to reel machines. If need be I could take a look at it for you.
