Subject: Re: [rs-ba1] What happens if the internet connection drops while I'm in TX?

Hi Kevin,

I already have a WiFi switch on my 7610. Works great and does NOT need a separate gateway.

However my Icom IC-PW1 is another story. First off the amp uses 240 VAC and I could not find a WiFi switch at voltage.  BUT, even if there was one, the amp REQUIRES that you push the Power and Amp/Protect switches to get the amp powered back on and ready to transmit. And there is no CAT or CI-V controls on the PW1. Thanks Icom!

If you lose power while away  from home and while operating remote, you are QRP until you return home and push the buttons!

The SwitchBots were a good solution but they disappeared from the market…. The FingerBots require another purchase of an additional gateway (hub) for Internet operations.

Would be nice if modern radios had TX time limit setting options given how common remote ops has become.

Hello Jerry,

Great point!  The good news is that my Icom IC-7610 and IC-9700 does in fact have what you point out; "TX time limit".  I have mine set to 3 minutes. Also, you don't always have to perform a "power on reset" to get your Icom IC-7610 or IC9700 to reconnect to the internet.  I have learned over the years that you can initiate a reconnect and by the third try, your back in business.

I rarely lose my internet at my QTH, but a large while traveling, I do experience a connection loss via cell towers, especially traveling across interstate highway 80 between Nevada and Utah.  However, the Cell towers have improved significantly over the past 8 years.  They have become robust along most of interstate highways 10, 20, and 40 between California and Texas.  I have spent long hours traveling across the United States without losing my Cell connection and enjoying hours of QSOs via remote operations.  I call this my Digital Mobile station.

I also operate remote operations working the Satellites that pass over my QTH using my Icom IC-9700, SAT controller, Yaesu 5500DC AZ/EL rotator, and my deep space cross beams with remote control for switching between right hand and left hand polarization.

Intelligent power switches, Pan/Tilt/Zoom CAMs with AI, and remote Kill Switches are also helpful with operating remote, especially if you are running an amplifier at full legal limit.  My CAMs with AI will send me a text message anytime it sees any of my rigs turn on or off and alert me if there is smoke, fire, and/or carbon monoxide detected anywhere at the home QTH.  Yes, my intelligent CAM works with every smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide detection device located in every room at my QTH.  This alarm capability, thank goodness has never been needed.

Best regards,
Kevin, WA6JKN
