Message 6: IOTA Tour

Now that the dust has settled from the IOTA Contest, and the Jarvis Island DXpedition has ended, I thought it would be a good time to post my intention to activate several IOTAs while camping for 2-3 nights at several island locations, as follows (times approximate):

9/08/24, 2300z to 9/09/24, 2300z:  NA-085, St. George Is., Dr. J.G. Bruce SP (also POTA US-0635)
9/10/24, 2300z to 9/12/24, 2300z:  NA-076, Havens Is./Cedar Key
9/13/24. 2300z to 9/15/24, 2300z:  NA-034, Mullet Key
9/16/24, 2300z to 9/18/24, 2300z:  NA-138, Amelia Is., Ft. Clinch SP (also POTA US-1869)
9/19/24, 2300z to 9/20/24, 2300z:  NA-058, Jekyll Is.

I’ve adapted my small RV to serve as a rolling shack of sorts. Based on lessons learned from my May “practice” trip to NA-142 and NA-213, I’ve worked on a couple improvements, the first being a mount to install a CrankIR vertical (which served pretty well in a ground-based role) atop my RV, using the tripod stand to elevate the radial, rather than have the vertical in the tripod on the ground and risk disenchantment of owners or park rangers by tying the radial off to trees.  Hopefully, that will also elevate my signal.  Band changes will be more difficult, but it may result in better reception both ways.  After arriving at a (non-negotiable) assigned space at NA-213 in May, I found myself virtually surrounded by pole-mounted electrical transformers, primary drops and a bank of park electrical distribution panels within about 200 feet of my antenna, resulting in a minimum S-7 noise floor, which pretty much quashed that effort.  For this trip, to the extent possible, I took pains to select outer perimeter campsites and paid extra (where possible) to confirm I wouldn’t be moved.  I’ve discovered there’s no guarantee of success when making trips to sites that I’ve never visited, so I don’t want to sow high expectations; a similar interference issue or other site limitation could rear its ugly head at one or more of the stops.  I’m particularly concerned about Havens Island, but I will strive to overcome any obstacles.  I should also note I’m not travelling alone; my wife and dog have both made it clear they won’t tolerate unlimited and continuous radio operations in our tiny home on wheels.

Please note this trip is weather-dependent.  We live on the gulf coast of Florida; a hurricane threatening our home could truncate, or even cancel our plans.  If it was scheduled almost exactly a month earlier, Hurricane Debbie would likely have closed every island from which I plan to operate, which would obviously have canceled or postponed our trip.  We actually had to leave NA-138 after one night last year due to a hurricane threat.

None of these IOTAs are rare (though NA-067 does require validation) but I plan to provide any documentation necessary to validate them.  I will attempt to vary operation times to take advantage of propagation openings, primarily operating CW and Phone, but may also include some Digital operation (FT8).  The rig is a Yaesu FTdx10 at 100 watts CW and Phone, 50 watts Digital.  I’m hoping for good weather, and to hear you in a pileup!
