For Immediate Release
During the Caldor Fire<https://napsg.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=6dc469279760492d802c7ba6db45ff0e&query=USA_Wildfires_v1_5644%2CUniqueFireIdentifier%2C2021-CAENF-024030&fbclid=IwAR1eglrzBG9IlWzEr4pg6nzzb_jtxdPbFLMle2Rud_5aZtQq2PyuuLb9PiU>, the El Dorado County Amateur Radio Club (http://www.EDCARC.Net) has been providing radio communications support for small- and large-animal rescue efforts being conducted by members of the South County Large Animal Rescue group (http://www.sclar.org/), El Dorado County Animal Service<https://www.edcgov.us/animalservices>s, other volunteer organizations<https://www.dropbox.com/s/j718g0olrqdqy9q/IMG_4709.jpeg?dl=0>, and employees of Emergency Response Agencies from throughout the state. Many of the radio communications volunteers are also members of the El Dorado County Amateur Radio Club's Neighborhood Radio Watch program: https://www.facebook.com/groups/NeighborhoodRadioWatch
As the Caldor Fire destroyed the community of Grizzly Flats<blob:https://www.kcra.com/727db3db-5a33-48c7-b171-65faf1316ce9>, threatened Lake Tahoe, and caused evacuations in dozens of communities throughout the County, thousands of area Residents were forced to flee their homes without having time to round up their pets and livestock. We desperately love our animal companions, whether big or small, and being separated and unable to care for them in the midst of a disaster is truly heart-wrenching. Because of the mountainous terrain, many of our neighborhoods already had little or no cell of Internet communications, and the fire only made things worse.
In response, the Club quickly deployed our Mobile ARES Communications Center<https://www.dropbox.com/s/2akrc9igcoj35rg/EDCARC_Trailer.jfif?dl=0>, and several Members stepped up to volunteer their time and radios to accompany the Animal Rescue Teams dispatched into these impacted areas. Composed of SCLAR Members<http://www.sclar.org/>, Animal Services personnel<https://www.edcgov.us/animalservices>, Public employees<https://www.dropbox.com/s/rlje0bpair5qjbw/Contra_Costa_Animal_Services.JPG?dl=0>, and radio communications staff, several teams have been conducting regular, daily animal rescue missions and welfare checks<https://www.dropbox.com/s/opj3bncdgup1pkf/Wilbur_The_Pig.jpg?dl=0> throughout the impacted areas. Until residents are permitted to return, these Teams are providing vital food<https://www.dropbox.com/s/xkceidb2nl88d5w/Food_Donations.jfif?dl=0>, water, and care<https://www.dropbox.com/s/3lijbef2cn6aeuq/Horse_Hug.jpeg> for abandoned animals to help our friends and neighbors during this difficult time.
Who do I call for evacuation or a welfare check on my animals?
The answer is El Dorado County Animal Services: Western slope: 530-621-5795 or the shelter at 530-621-7631. South Tahoe area: 530-573-7925.
SCLAR will respond as directed by El Dorado County Animal Services. They cannot self-deploy or respond directly to phone calls for assistance.
