[SFDXA] "What is ham radio?"

During the Hurricane Preparedness Open House last week a young mom with two 
small children in tow was making the rounds of the various displays. She stopped 
by our EOC static display of a Ham Radio HF station, then with a quizzical look 
on her face said, “I’ve never heard of Ham Radio, what is it?”

So, in ten words or so, "What is ham radio?" Your answer is greatly appreciated, 
please include # of years licensed.
