Hi Everyone,

First, I’d like to thank David, K4DLF for his nearly four years of
service as our SFL Section Manager. It was my pleasure serving with
David as Assistant SM. I look forward to working with him on future
Section activities.

June 1st marks the beginning of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane season
which will, hopefully, end on November 30th. The Amateur Radio station
at the National Hurricane Center in Miami WX4NHC held their annual test
on May 31st. I understand that several hundred hams made contact with
WX4NHC during their communications test. This effort should signal that
we should all prepare for what might lie ahead this summer and fall for
us in South Florida. As radio amateurs, we have the unique ability to
serve our communities with communications support in times of disaster.
As is often heard this time of the year; Hope for the best, however,
prepare for the worst. The following links from the National Hurricane
Center can provide additional info on the upcoming season:

Storm Surge Flooding Map
As announced at the National Hurricane Conference in April 2014, a new
storm surge flooding map will be issued for hurricanes and some
tropical storms. Feedback is being requested on these maps. See a link
below for that info:

Hurricane Outlook
The current prediction for the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season is for a
near to below normal Hurricane Season, however, it only takes one
hurricane to affect your region to make it feel like an active season.

The most popular ARRL operating event is rapidly approaching on June
28-29, 2014. Of course, I’m talking about Field Day. If your club has
not already done so, please list your FD operation on the ARRL FD
Locator. The link is http://www.arrl.org/field-day-locator

It just takes a few minutes and it will help enhance public awareness
of your FD activity. Don’t overlook the bonus points available for a
public info booth, alternate power, copying the W1AW bulletin, etc. The
GOTA station is a great opportunity to invite new recruits to experience
the fun of our wonderful hobby. And don’t forget to publicize your
activity with the local news media. Complete FD info is available at

http://www.arrl.org/field-day

As we have done in the past, Section officials will visit FD sites
within our 14 county area. We will rely on the info listed on the FD
Locator. Have fun at Field Day and most of all, be safe.

This year of 2014 is an exciting one for Amateur Radio. The American
Radio Relay League was founded in Hartford, CT in May of 1914. This
centennial of the ARRL brings many celebrations and operating events
during the year. The Centennial QSO Party
and the regional and national Centennial events that all ARRL members
should participate in are a once in a lifetime opportunity. A complete
list of these events is available at this link:
http://www.arrl.org/centennial#regional See you at the National
Convention in Hartford on July 17-19.

Well, I guess I’ve rambled on enough for now. My thanks to all the
members of the SFL Section for their support over the years. You ARE
Amateur Radio. Your ongoing support and activity with your clubs, ARES
groups, contesting, DXing, traffic handling, VE teams, mentoring new
hams and the goodwill you establish with your QSOs with amateurs
around the world is most appreciated. Besides, It’s just plain FUN.
So, let’s enjoy our wonderful hobby and see you on the air, at a club
meeting or hamfest.

Vy 73,

Jeff WA4AW
