Bill,
Here is a 'trick' that I employ to see if it's worthwhile to get on HF:
1. Go to www.swpc.noaa.gov
2. Click on Solars flares
3. Click on 6 hr 1 minute displays - have it running in the background but where you can see it.
4. When an X flare occurs, turn on your equipment and check the bands. Since it takes 8.3 minutes for the x-ray to reach the earth (if geofeasible), then the F2 layer will start enhancing e.g. total electron content will start rising.
You might notice 10 to 20 dB improvement in the sunlit path of interest. It will last for sometime and the lower bands will also be (initially) positively affected. Then it will (possibly) go into the toilet as the heavier particles start arriving from an associated CME 36 to 48 hours later.

I have taken advantage of this on a number of occasions with good results.

Rich

Solar activity is high.  Region NOAA 11967 has had six
M-class flares since yesterday's report along with several
C-class events.  The region is beta-gamma-delta class with
some bright H-alpha.  Further M-class activity likely and
an X-class flare is possible.
NOAA 11969, S14 E66 (X=-864,Y=-196). Beta-gamma-delta region.
Position as of January 28, 2014 at 17:00 UT.
