I was relaxing with a cup of coffee, and with the movie "The High and the
Mighty" (Warner Bros., 1954) droning on in the background on the Retroplex
channel. I noticed a scene of a radio operator on a ship (the Cristobal Trader)
listening to a radio signal from an airplane. I took a couple of quick shots
with my cell phone camera. Notice the W1AW QSL card about mid picture! The
operator later relays emergency messages from the airplane to a shore station on
his home built radio. The radio, shown in later scenes, has a nice open chassis
with visible tubes, one with a plate feed on top. .
The radio operator, Gonzalez, is identified as "Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez
(Amateur Radio Operator, SS Cristobal Trader)" on Wikipedia.
Thought you'd be interested in the 60 year old QSL card from a then 40 year old
ARRL!
I wonder if I can use this for "SWL/received W1AW" credit in the Centennial
Celebration?
