Oh, and the last step is a simple Google search on the callsign. Google image searches will often produce pictures of QSLs, for example.

Another way to answer queries like this is from the RSGB IOTA system.
One can search for island names here:
http://www.rsgbiota.org/info/searchbyname.php ,
where one finds that Abu Ail is group AS-009, then look up the RSGB IOTA entry for AS-009:
http://www.rsgbiota.org/info/creditedForGroup.php?refno=AS-009
The entry has all the activations credited for that entity which, in this case, is:
"The following activations have been accepted for credit three or more times:
A15AA
A15AB
A15AC
A15AW
ET3ZU/A
G3GPE/VS9K
G5ACI/AA
J20/A
J20/Z
OE6XG/A
VS9KAC
VS9KDV
VS9KRV"
Not all of these are necessarily before the entity was deleted, but in the case of Abu Ail (Yemen), it's a good place to start.

Subject: [SFDXA] ABU AIL Island
I have been moving old QSOs from paper logs, and cards to my composite log in my computer logging program so those records agree with ARRL/LoTW records. As others probably know QSO's recorded by the league in simple paper markings on the DXCC lists of the time only were transferred to electronic data bases using the DXCC ID number, no call or band, or specific modes.
I have LoTW credit for Abu Ail Is., but I have not been able to find the card or the paper log entry. Mainly because I do not remember the call used, or the date worked. I thought it was one of Don Miller's activities in the late 60's, but I did learn others had but this Red Sea Island on later as well.
So what I am looking for from others who may have worked that entity is what call and what dates did you work them? I am sure with a few clues from others I will know which log to search. Back in those days I had about 3 logs a year.
Can anyone help??
