II Navajo Code Talker Special Event Station TBX-6 Radio April 4th
Wed Apr 2, 2014 7:37 pm (PDT)

Greetings Everyone,

I just wanted to provide you with the details for Stafford Area Radio
Association and the Marine Corps Amateur Radio Club special event 1X1
station on the air this Friday, April 4th.

The last living member if the first platoon of United States Marine
Corps Navajo Code Talkers, Chester Nez, will be the guest of honor this
Friday at the dedication of Platoon 382 Hall.

Platoon 382 Hall is the new addition to the Marine Corps Network
Operations and Security Command (MCNOSC) located on Marine Corps Base
Quantico, Virginia.

MCNOSC recently acquired a WWII, GE TBX-6 radio, one of the models used
during the war by the Code Talkers. As part of the dedication we hope Mr
Nez will be able to use the TBX-6 and talk with the Pentagon Amateur
Radio Club, call sign WAR.

After the dedication, Mr Nez will be hanging around to sign copies if
his book and a few of us hams will begin operating the special event
station, N4C, (Navajo 4 Codetalker).

The Special Event station is co-sponsored by the Marine Corps Amateur
Radio Club (KK4ZLL) and the Stafford Area Radio Association (WS4VA).
WS4VA Technical Director, and KK4ZLL President, Rich Corrigan (N0RMC)
and I, have been working closely with MCNOSC setting up and coordinating
the amateur radio side of the event.

The ceremony start time is 1300 local on April 4th. Once the ceremony is
over, probably around 1330 or 1345, all stations (N4C) will begin
operating.

The call in use will be N4C "Navajo 4 Codetalker". The plan at this
point is to have a 20M station14.265MHz to start USB (+-5khz or so) a
D-STAR Station, and the TBX-6 station.

All will be operating from at least 1330 till 1700 local, (1730-2100 UTC).

The TBX-6 will be operating on 3.885MHz AM only.

D-STAR will be operating on our repeater stack (WS4VA). Those who want
to contact via D-STAR can connect to the repeater directly from their
station if they are out of the area. If they are in the area just call
on the Charlie Module (2M).

It is important to know that the TBX-6 is AM only and maximum output is
no more than 5W and we have nothing to bump up the signal so it will be
just like it was 70yrs ago when it was employed.

If you have the HF-AM capability, this will be a fun and historic
opportunity to participate.

73,

Ron Startzel

President, Stafford Area Radio Association
Vice-President Marine Corps Amateur Radio Club
