> When we hear about those high profile Dxpeditions, engaged in challenging trips over the oceans, the name “R.V. Braveheart” often comes up as the ship being used for such demanding crossings. The latest occurrance is the much awaited FT5ZM Dxpedition to Amsterdam island due to take place in a few weeks, but we can’t forget the past operations that this ship has supported for the ham radio community, such as, going back in time, the ZL9CI Dxpedition to Campbell island in 1999 or, just to name a few, VP8ORK (South Orkneys) in 2011 and ZL8R (Raoul Island – Kermadec) in 2006.

> We wanted to learn something more about the history of this vessel and share the details with our readers.
>
> Browsing the website www.braveheart.pn, we have found that the ship’s owner and crew are from New Zealand and the Bravehear is available for trips across all southern oceans, – South Pacific, South Atlantic, Indian Ocean, French Polynesia, Solomon islands, Vanuatu.
>
> It is surveyed by Survey Nelson, managed by Stoney Creek Shipping Co. Ltd and owned by Nigel Jolly. The shipmaster is Matt Jolly.
>
> Let’s find out something about the figures of this ship that has made a lot to turn many DXpeditions dreams into reality.
>
> The Braveheart is 39 meters long, all made of steel, with a crew of five New Zealand sailors. The fuel capacity is 94,000 litres. The water capacity is 6,000 litres with a watermaker of 4,500 litres per day. Last slipping for survey was in 2007 and the ship is equipped with helicopter deck and two berth cabins that can accomodate 12.
>
> It has been used for film crews, for several scientific operations, such as those of National Geographic and much more.
>
> With this article we have tried to tell what this Southern Seas Queen means for all Expeditions in these parts of the world (including of course Dxpeditions!)

> Fabrizio is an SWL since 1978 and likes listening to rare DX's while sitting in a park with a fishing rod antenna. When there's nothing really rare around, he likes listening to rag-chewers from North America, Europe, Australia, etc. So far, he has heard 319 DXCC entities.
