> FCC Chairman Surprise Hamvention® Guest - FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, whose plane was diverted to Dayton because of weather problems, visited the Hamvention before continuing on his trip.

> 2011 Dayton Hamvention® Successful Despite Challenges - The "big show" at Dayton was a big success despite plumbing problems that shut down Hara Arena's rest rooms for half of Saturday and weather troubles away from Dayton that made if difficult for many attendees to get home easily and on time.

> NOAA Predicts Above Normal Hurricane Season - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting that the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins June 1, will be more active than usual.

> FEMA Head Praises Hams - In a speech at an FCC forum, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate "the ultimate backups" and "our last line of defense" in meeting the needs of disaster survivors.

> Satellite Image Shows Tornado's Path - The path of destruction left behind by the EF-4 tornado that roared through Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on April 27 is clearly visible in a satellite image from NASA's ASTER satellite system.

> WWV/WWVH to Drop Space Weather Reports - The Space Weather Prediction Center will discontinue its regular geophysical alert messages on WWV and WWVH as of this coming September 6.

> Lifetime Credit Sought for Amateur Exams Passed - The Anchorage VEC has petitioned the FCC to grant lifetime credit for all amateur examination elements passed, even if the license associated with them has been expired for more than two years.
>  
> FCC Wants Another 90 Cents for That Vanity Call - The FCC is proposing a 90-cent increase in the fee for obtaining or renewing a vanity amateur radio callsign, from the current $13.30 for a 10-year term to $14.20.

> ... FCC Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker steps down from the Commission on June 3 to take a job with Comcast.
> ... Julio Ripoll, WD4R, Assistant Coordinator of the amateur radio station at the National Hurricane Center, received the National Weather Service's Distinguished Service Award.
> ... The first post-war recipient of CQ's Worked All Zones (WAZ) award has become a Silent Key. Ben Stevenson, W2BXA, was 97.

> Second Ham Station Installed on ISS - The International Space Station now has two active amateur stations, with the installation of a transceiver in the Columbus module.

> Battery Issues Beset Ham Satellites - The failure of a much-ballyhooed activation of the ARISSat-1 satellite from on-board the International Space Station in April has been blamed on a nearly dead battery. And it appears that the batteries aboard the AO-51 satellite are failing and will not hold a charge.

> Senators Seek Protection for GPS - Two U.S. Senators -- Pat Roberts of Kansas and Ben Nelson of Nebraska -- are asking colleagues to join them in urging the FCC to take all steps necessary to protect the Global Positioning System (GPS) from interference.

> Bob Heil to Host Ham Show on TWiT.tv - Microphone manufacturer and showman Bob Heil, K9EID, will host a new ham radio show on an internet-only network known as TWiT.tv (This Week in Technology).

> ... The FCC upheld a $4,000 fine levied on a Philadelphia ham for "freebanding."
> ... Hams in Indiana are exempted from the new statewide ban on talking and texting while driving.
