Hi Bill,
The IC-9100 will be much superior to the 746Pro. The HF section of the 9100
is essentially the same as the IC-7410.
I had an opportunity to try out the 9100 at a dealer preview in Osaka last
November, and was very impressed with it. I posted the following comments on
the IC-9100 Yahoo group at the time:
****
Today my good friend Johnny Siu VR2XMC from Hong Kong I were privileged to
receive an invitation Icom to attend a pre-release showing of the IC-9100 in
Osaka. We were able to have a good "hands-on" session with two
series-production IC-9100's.
The 9100 is as smooth as silk; everything on it works just as one would
expect from Icom. The radios on display were connected to HF and VHF
antennas, and with 40m LSB on MAIN and 2m USB on SUB the received audio
from the two sides was presented on the L and R headset earpieces
respectively, with superb, clear
sound quality and perfect separation. The large monochrome display was
pin-sharp, and all the 9100's controls and DSP features worked flawlessly.
The overall perception of the radio is civilised and elegant; controls have
a silky feel, with crisp detents where applicable. A new feature is that the
NR and MN controls are multi-turn, with very fine resolution. The fit and
finish are of the usual high Icom standard.
The display was not set up for transmitting, but the radios were connected
to computers running the new Icom RS-BA1 R/C software.
There was a good crowd at the showing, mainly invited customers and dealer
reps.

I will be receiving IC-9100 and IC-7410 "loaner" units for first-run
testing in the next few weeks. There is an IC-9100 page on my website:

Cheers for now, 73,

I'm a VHF guy, so I had been waiting for this rig for sometime. But the
$3800 price tag, for a radio without even a color screen, has scared me
away. HF folks, do you think the HF portion of the 9100 is much more than a
7410? To me, the 9100 seems a lot like a 746 Pro with the addition of 70
cm, duplex, and a few other features.
Anyone tried out the 9100 yet? What do you think?
