I'm aware a of few folks who have had issues with the newer OFFICE file
formats. You do not need to have OFFICE 2007 to deal with these files.

Microsoft OFFICE 2007 files can be written and read by earlier versions
of OFFICE by installing the FREE Microsoft office compatibility pack.
They make it a bit hard to find, but here is the URL to the instructions
and to the download site. This is a Microsoft site, the files are FREE.

I've been reading and writing the latest file formats with my OFFICE
2003 set for quite some time. The converters work just fine.
