HS1CKC, Winit Kongprasert, the Vice president of RAST, the Royal
Amateur Society of Thailand, became a silent key February 19th in a
motorcycle accident in Petchaboon Province in northern Thailand
(alternatively described as happening in the northern suburbs of
Bangkok). He reportedly was on a powerful new bike when he hit a bad
patch of road, spilled and was hit by an oncoming vehicle, dying
immediately at the scene. HS0ZDX, Tony, says Khun Winit was one of
the pioneers of amateur radio in Thailand, active on VHF and HF from
his home station, from the HS0AC club station where he ran a 40M net,
and from his car while mobile. He also helped establish the Thailand
DX Association, HSDXA, which began as the Thailand Group 1996
(TG1996). Winit was also deputy manager of the HS0AC station.
HS0ZCW, Charles Harpole (aka K4VUD) adds that Winit was an avid
contester and DXer on phone and CW and organized many DXpeditions
within Thailand, encouraging many native Thais to take part. He also
helped many visiting foreign hams in making their ham radio
arrangements in Thailand. He was an avid collector of Collins gear
and his mobile installation was impressive. He was in the process of
enlarging his motorcycle collection and riding more. He held an
executive position in computer-related manufacturing. He leaves
behind a wife and two teenage sons who live in Bangkok. Bathing rites
and Buddhist prayers began this weekend.
