Adam,
Since you enjoyed it, I've dug up a nugget recently improved upon by my
good friend Tom Manning.
Origin is unknown, but I seem to remember a 1970-80-ish version in
Reader's Digest. Here's Tom's
edited version of the classic:
__________
"Eschew Obfuscation.
In promulgating your esoteric cogitations, or articulating
your superficial sentimentalities and amicable, philosophical,
or psychological observations, beware of platitudinous
ponderosity. Let your conversational communications possess
a compact conciseness, a clarified comprehensibility, a
coalescent cogency and a concatenated consistency.
Eschew obfuscation and all conglomerations of flatulent
garrulity, jejune babblement and asinine affectations. Let
your extemporaneous descantings and unpremeditated expatiations
have intelligibility and voracious vivacity without rodomontade
or thrasonical bombast. Sedulously avoid all polysyllabic
profundity, pompous prolixity, psittaceous vacuity, ventriloquial
verbosity and vaniloquent vapidity. Shun double-entendres and
pestiferous profanity, obscurant or apparent.
In short: Be brief and don't use big words."
-edited and quoted by Tom Manning, 2010, original
source unknown.
_________
Try that in the preamble to a 2-meter net, and be thankful that you
didn't get that on your 20 WPM FCC code exam way back when!
