The Broward Amateur Radio Club (BARC) will be participating in the American
Radio Relay League (ARRL) 2010 Field Day event on Saturday, June 26th and
Sunday, June 27th at Quiet Waters Park, 401 S. Powerline Rd., Deerfield
Beach, FL 33442. The event will be held under a huge tent in the Primitive
Camping Area in the southwest portion of the park beginning at 2:00 pm
Saturday and ending on 2:00 pm Sunday. You can come for all or part of it.
The event itself is FREE, but there is a nominal charge to gain entry into
the park. All amateur operators as well as the public are welcome to attend
to learn about ham radio and practice their operating skills.
The Broward Amateur Radio Club will be serving a delicious BBQ for only
$5.00 per meal. To get your mouth watering, here's a sampling of what will
be served - BBQ Chicken, Smoked Chicken, Sausage, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs,
Chips, Assorted Side Dishes and Soft Drinks. For breakfast you might see
pancakes, eggs and coffee.
Let us know if you are planning on eating so that we can make sure we have
enough food for everyone.
ARRL Field Day is the most popular on-the-air operating event in amateur
radio. Tens of thousands of amateur radio operators gather for a public
demonstration of our service. Field Day is a part educational, part
operating event, part public relations event - and ALL about FUN!
The purpose of Field Day is a trial run to see how well the ham radio
operator can set up their radio, put up an antenna and make contacts with
other ham operators around the country or around the world.
One important part of Field Day is to learn what it would take to get
communications going after a disaster such as Hurricane Andrew or the Haiti
Earthquake. The other part of Field Day is to meet and share with other
hams and the general public the enthusiasm and excitement of ham radio. In
past months, many reports of ham radio operators providing critical
communications in emergencies have been in the news. From Haiti to
California, during floods, fires, earthquakes, tornados and other crises,
Amateur Radio volunteers are providing emergency communications for many
rescue and recovery groups. Amateur Radio operators are often the first to
report critical information to responders in the first hours of crisis
situations. FEMA, DHS, the National Weather Service, and emergency
management offices include Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARESR) operators
in their communications plans. On June 26-27, the public will be able to
meet and talk with the hams and see for themselves what Amateur Radio is all
about.
New hams are encouraged to attend as well as those thinking about becoming
licensed. In addition to the main operating station, there will be a
special station set up called a GOTA station which means "Get On The Air".
A seasoned and experienced ham will be there to show you the ropes so that
you have the opportunity to explore different aspects of the hobby. Don't
worry about bringing equipment, it will be set up for you. We just need you
to show up, have fun and join us for some great food and camaraderie.
Since this is a 24 hour event, you are welcome to spend the night. Many
hams sleep under the stars or in the comfort of their cars. If you have a
tent, you are welcome to set it up. Bring your family as well!
We hope you will be able to join us and enjoy Field Day at Quiet Waters
Park!
