Subject: [South Florida DX Association] K4FK update

This morning N4PL (Wald Sierocinski, Motorola ARC President), K4XF, and I
worked on the K4FK antenna issues. Upon climbing the tower, N4PL found that
the suspect clockwise limit switch wire was broken at the rotor terminal.
He repaired it, and another that had similarly corroded and failed at a
touch, and added a strain relief to the rotor cable so the others might last
longer. He then turned the beam to due South (where the controller thought
it was) and tightened the yagi-mast U-bolts, which had worked loose.

Back on the roof, we lowered the 40/30m dipoles (they're on a pulley system)
and repaired the 30m dipole, which had a broken wire. This is just a
temporary fix, though, as its wire is really not made for antenna use and it
will fail again soon. I plan to purchase some #14 Copperweld or equivalent
in Orlando to make a more permanent fix for the dipoles. Back in the shack,
we reconnected the rotor controller to its cable and recalibrated.

Everything now works, although the 30m dipole seems a little short.
However, the Pro III's tuner takes care of any mismatch. The rotor now
rotates again and, best of all, points in the correct direction. To test it
out, we worked T32BJ on 20m CW and someone else I'm forgetting at the
moment.

Thanks to N4PL and K4XF for getting K4FK back into operation!

73,

Ed Callaway, N4II.
