Hi everyone,
Happy New Year to all of you. May the year be one of good health, good times,
and good radio contacts.
Many of you have heard that we are compiling a list of hams interested in
deploying to Haiti. A valid passport is the minimum requirement. At this
time we are only compiling a list - there are no assignments to be filled
yet.
Silent Key, Blaine Caudhill. WA4EIC. Anyone checking into the AIN, the SFAN,
or a variety of other nets remembers Blaine reading Bulletins. He was also a
faithful traffic handler on several nets.
We have several hamfests around the section and the state in the next few
months. Please stop at the ARRL table and meet the section staff and
volunteers.

We ended 2009 on a good note considering there were two major holidays and
November sported such a great increase in numbers. While we lost check-ins
with people traveling north and entertaining visitors that headed south, we
didn't do badly and there were only 18 less pieces of traffic with one net
not reporting. Many thanks to each net manager for their great
record-keeping and reporting.
My best wishes to all for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2010.

Finally, an Op-Ed.
Field Day - What It Really Is
Op-Ed by W4WR
I'd like to share some of my personal thoughts about Field Day. I should also
mention that these opinions in no way reflect the positions of the ARRL,
either Headquarters or our Section Manager and are strictly my own.
The discussion seems to have gone on for years. And still, no one can agree.
The opinions are so equally divided that I know a consensus will never - now
or in the future - be reached.
The discussion is always the same. "It's a contest!" insisted 50%. No, it's
emergency preparedness countered the other 50%. And so, back and forth it
goes year after year.
During my tenure as Section Manager (yes, I had a life before I moved to
Florida) each year I would travel to 15 or so FD sites over the weekend. Some
were pretty plushy and some were a bit more primitive. Most were somewhere in
the middle. And after so many years and so many Field Days, I finally decided
what Field Day was.
