Hi all,
I am back in Slovakia for the summer and hope to work some of you as OM9ACA. I can confirm what Steve reported, the bands are in much better shape this year, the sigs from stateside are far stronger and more numerous than last year.
Only problem for me is that, after just 3 days of operating, my Tokyo Hy-Power HL-1.5K blew out. Took off the cover and saw that one of the zener diodes protecting the MOSFETs had exploded. I wrote to THP and they said this probably means all 4 of the MOSFETs and the diodes have blown and that I'll need to send the PA module in for repair.
If this is so, I'll be a very unhappy camper, as the amp is out of warranty and the MOSFETs cost like $130 each. I don't understand how there could be such severe damage with only 50 watts of drive, a low SWR antenna, and all the protective circuitry. If it's just a bad diode, that is fixable here and I'll be back up in a few days.
73, Bill NZ5N/OM9ACA
