To the Florida Ham Community.
I would like to share our experience at the Hurricane Conference last week 
with all of you and my delight with the meetings and interviews with our new 
Director ,Bill Read.
Bill is not only a Ham himself, but is very well spoken and not shy about 
praising Ham Radio for its role during and after hurricanes and severe 
weather.
I believe that Bill will have a very positive influence on Ham Radio, 
locally and nationally.

Amateur "Ham" Radio was highly praised for their public service and 
emergency communications during and after hurricanes at the 2008 National 
Hurricane Conference.
The annual conference was held last week in Orlando, Florida and attended by 
2,100 people from the United States, Caribbean and Central America that are 
involved in Meteorology, Emergency Management, Disaster Preparedness, 
Hurricane Products Manufacturers, Disaster Communications, etc..

The Amateur Radio Work Shop presented the many modes and methods used by Ham 
Radio Operators and Nets, such as the VoIP Hurricane Net and the Hurricane 
Watch Net, to gather Surface Reports and relay Hurricane Advisories and 
other data to and from the affected areas when other modes of communications 
fail.
One of the goals of the Work Shop was to increase participation and 
preparation of Ham Radio Operators of all skill levels and mode interest 
during Hurricane Season.
Surface Reporting examples, techniques and quality goals were also presented 
followed by an Open Discussion Forum.

The new NHC Director, Bill Read, also a licensed Amateur Radio Operator 
KB5FYA, spoke highly about the important role of Amateur Radio during and 
after hurricanes.
