Subject: Arborist Day at the U.S. Coast Guard Hillsboro Light Station

The Arborist Day at the USCG Hillsboro Light Station is shaping up to be an
outstanding event. Members from the USCG Active Duty, USCG Reserves, USCG
Auxiliary, Cub Scouts, Broward County Master Gardeners, local volunteers and
more are scheduled to attend and participate.

The planned activities include:

1. The planting of 48 (36") silver buttonwood bushes. We should have the
holes dug to plant the bushes on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.

2. Trimming, shaping, and weeding of several existing silver buttonwood
(and other types of hedges) planting beds.

3. Placement of 2800 square feet of sod (18" x 18" squares) in the areas
that were cleared of sand deposits placed by Hurricane WILMA. The areas are
being cleared of the excess sand during the week of 10SEP07 under a state
issued permit.

4. The removal of garbage and other debris within the sea grape hedge to
include the removal of the railroad vines surrounding the lighthouse.

5. The weeding and maintenance of the area below the lighthouse and
surrounding area.

6. Beach Clean-up of the Hillsboro Point beaches (both the Inlet and
Atlantic Beach).

7. Planting 4 gumbo limbo trees (if I can locate a supplier) on the south
side of the property.

8. Create proper planting circles around the 8 newly (1JUL07) planted gumbo
limbo trees, and the 4 additional trees if I can locate them, to ensure
proper growth.

We have several Master Gardeners from the Broward Extension Office who have
volunteered to assist us with our Arborist Day. The Master Gardeners will
be of great value to teaching us all with proper gardening techniques as we
carry out the day.

As part of Florida Lighthouse Day, the lighthouse, which first broadcasted
its light from the Hillsboro inlet in 1907, will be open for tours. The
Hillsboro Light Preservation Society may also have their information signs
and art for us all to enjoy and learn about the history of the light.

We also have the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society setting up a station in an
attempt to talk to lighthouses all over the World. They will be available
to discuss and demonstrate the art of amateur radio and the purpose they can
serve.

I have also invited representatives from the Sea Turtle program to educate
all the volunteers of the dangers faced by sea turtle hatchlings caused by
land side lighting and improper hedge trimming.

A barbeque lunch is being provided at 1130 by ISC Miami. We will also have
water on ice.

Bring your gloves, your hedge clippers, and shovels for a great time at the
Hillsboro Light.

DUE TO THE NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS ANTICIPATED, CARPOOLING IS HIGHLY
ENCOURAGED.
