The Amateur Radio Station WX4NHC at the National Hurricane Center and the
> Hurricane Watch Net will be featured on National Public Radio's program 
> "All
> Things Considered", hosted by Noah Adams. (Friday May 19th)

 Noah spent several days at NHC to create this unique behind-the-scenes
> documentary program. WX4NHC Amateur Radio Coordinator, John McHugh K4AG 
> and
> Assistant Coordinator, Julio Ripoll WD4R  explained how volunteer Amateur
> Radio Operators help Hurricane Forecasters and how Ham Radio is still a
> vital function during hurricanes. Many times Ham Radio is the only means 
> of
> communications in the aftermath of a hurricane.

 During the radio demonstration at NHC, radio contact was made with Bob
> Botwin K5SIV from Austin Texas, a Net Control Station for the Hurricane
> Watch Net.  The HWN is a large network of Ham Radio Operators 
> strategically
> located throughout the U.S., Canada, Caribbean and Central America and
> operate in support of WX4NHC during hurricanes. Together, WX4NHC and the 
> HWN
> gather surface weather and damage reports from stations inside the 
> hurricane
> in real time and also relay the Hurricane Advisories to stations in the
> affected area.  These "Surface Reports" are important to the Hurricane
> Forecasters, as they fill in gaps in data that may not be available from 
> any
> other means.
