Who would have dreamed that 2006 would start off with a hurricane still
> spinning in the Atlantic. Seems the non-hurricane time of year gets
shorter
> and shorter.
>
> We have had a lot of hands-on training for hurricanes but there are other
> events we need to be prepared for. One of the community colleges in the
> section is proposing a homeland security training complex. The first
class
> will begin late January and culminate with a mock disaster weekend
training
> exercise. Classes are planed for Saturdays and will be available to first
> responders and residents interested in disaster relief. The institution
to
> house the complex is Indian River Community College (IRCC) in Ft. Pierce
with
> a location convenient to the interstate. We'll provide more information
> soon.
>
> Several groups are doing classroom or on-the-air training for Level 1
> certification. We have a number of CEs (Certified Examiners) available to
> administer the exams at the end of training. Is your group taking
advantage
> of this opportunity?
>
> The budget for the section will be out soon, after the Board of Directors
> meeting later this week. I will stretch it as far as possible. This
budget
> covers some of the travel expenses for myself and the cabinet, door prizes
> that we bring to meetings and hamfests, postage, meeting expenses,
supplies
> such as video tapes available for loan to clubs, and other sundry items.
> When possible I combine club visits with business travel or use points for
> free hotel rooms and save section funds for other times. In 2006 we hope
to
> organize an ARES training day and several section wide meetings. If your
> group has free space for meetings that would be available or unused hours
at
> a hamfest facility please let me know. Perhaps several clubs could
combine
> efforts and host an event by providing cold drinks and snacks.
>
> I hope to see many of you at upcoming hamfests -- Miami and Orlando in
February
> and Stuart in March.
>
> Please keep the photos and newsletters coming. Toot your own horn.
Promote
> your club. I will do my best to post the items to the section news page
as
> timely as possible.
>
> And speaking of publicity this year is the 100th anniversary of voice
over
> the air. Use that theme for promoting your club activities and licensing
> classes. Look for more information about saying Hello to the world with
> amateur radio coming from the ARRL soon.
