I had a conversation with someone some time ago regarding Pop-up Windows in Microsoft XP. I mentioned I had seen an article in the
Wall Street Journal on how to disable the messaging conduit the Spammers use in XP. I finally found the article and will retype it
here. I do not use XP so cannot vouch for it. Good luck. It says it will not affect Instant Messaging.

Got to Start Menu and open the Control Panel.

Open "Administrative Tools".

Double-click on the choice called "Services"

In the long list of services locate the entry called "Messenger" and double-click on it.

A tabbed window will open. In the "General" tab you will see an option called "Startup Type". Microsoft sets this option to
"Automatic". You should change that. To do so, just click on the right arrow at the right to display the choices and select
"Disable". Then click "Ok" at the bottom of the window. Close all the other windows you have opened in this process by clicking the
"X" in the upper right hand corner.
