"...In the November 2002 issue of Scientific American, page 28, I found an article entitled Radio - Fine tuning. Some quotes: "The
engineers at Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector in Austin Texas have developed a set of silicon chips that apply digital
processing to standard analog signal. The system relies on algorithm running at 1,500 million instructions per second. It converts
AM or FM signal to an intermediate frequency that can be filtered and conditioned. The results can be near CD quality." It lists
lots of advantages but one might be interesting for ham radios. Quote:"The Symphony chip set can lock onto the desired frequency
even if the noise is 11 decibels lauder." Its software automatically adjusts the size of its band filter to suppress nearby
transmissions and isolate the target."
