I remember talking to Larry, W4AAV, one of our club's silent keys, abut
Sputnik. He worked at one of our government's listing posts some where in
Europe when Sputnik was launched. He said he was told to listen to a
certain frequency at a specific time and report what he heard. He said that
is was sputnik going over.  I don't remember much more about what he said
about it. Maybe some of the other members can add more to this.
