> Greetings from Yaounde, capitol city of Cameroon (TJ8) -
> It has been a crazy five weeks. I wanted to write my FOC friends
> this note to let you know where we are and what is going on.
> On October 31, after five days of mortar and artillery fire in the
> city, we evacuated Bangui and drove to our Yaloke mission station (225 km
> northwest of Bangui). About one week later I went back to Bangui with
> four men to see if we thought things were safe enough in the city to
> return. At the time things seemed relatively stable, so I drove back to
> Yaloke, picked up my team, and we all returned to Bangui. However that
> was not a smart move and as things continued to rapidly deteriorate in
> CAR, we all evacuated Bangui again on Nov 13 for Yaloke. After staying
> there just a short time, it was evident that the rebel forces were
> heading our way so on 21 November we all left for Berberati, a Swedish
> mission compound in the southwest corner of the country. After living
> THERE two days we received a report that the rebels were headed for
> Berberati, so on three hours notice we suddenly packed up and moved to
> Gamboula - a town in CAR but directly located on the border with
> Cameroon. On November 26, four drunk armed soldiers came to our mission
> at Gamboula demanding coffee, money, and trucks. That was the final straw
> and for the next several days a ten truck convoy (47 people) made its way
> across the abysmal roads, fought the interminable paperwork to get
> temporary visas, and ended up here in Yaounde at the large Summer
> Institute of Linguistics (SIL- Wycliffe Bible Translators) compound.
> We are fine but extremely tired, physically and emotionally. It has
> been a rough rough five weeks.
> We have no idea how long we will be here but things do not sound good
> in CAR so I am guessing it will be many months - if ever - before we get
> back to TL8 land. There is at least a possibility Jean and I may go back
> to the USA for a while - maybe a long while - but this is very tentative.
> The only good news is that my QSL manager Mike Cesak (W3MC) is
> getting a nice break for a while!!
