Washtenaw County's fire and police chiefs are asking that a millage be put
on the ballot in November to help pay for a new $29.8 million emergency radio
system to replace a mismatch of systems that is putting the public as well as
public safety officers at risk because of incompatibility.
During a presentation Thursday to the Washtenaw Metro Alliance, Ann Arbor
Police Chief Dan Oates said one option would be a one-half-mill, four-year
property tax levy. He said that would raise about $30 million and cost $62.50 a
year for someone who owned a $250,000 home.
