New York City has issued an RFP for a "citywide wireless mobile network" for
its public safety agencies, hoping to receive bids from wireless carriers that
can meet some pretty tough requirements: 95% street coverage, 2 Mbps
throughput, redundancy, encryptions, etc. The city is also setting the bar pretty high
for applications, including traffic signal control for emergency units;
transmission of large database files such as building design, construction and
floor plans, mug shots, fingerprints and criminal records; full motion video;
continuous biological, chemical, nuclear and radiological monitoring at selected
sites; patient vital signs, electrocardiograms, and other biometrics to
receiving hospitals; wireless emergency service call boxes; AVL; continuous
monitoring of water flow and purity; white boarding; and voice over IP to backup
emergency radio, landline or cellular services. Download the bid materials at:
