Howdy, yeah it sure looks good on paper! I'm looking
for a portable complement to my base monitoring
setup, IC R8500 & IC R100.
For awhile was considering the PCR-1000 but allways
needing a laptop places limits on portable
monitoring. My mind is pretty much made up on the
MKIII now ;)
Universal Radio lists the programming cable
at a 100 bucks. That strikes me as a steep price
just for a cable, but will probably bite the bullet
and get it. Looking at all of the frequencies I've
programmed into a monitoring receiver at once on
a text file is useful over the longterm. Instead
of taking a haphazard approach to detecting new
activity.
As I'm typing this the " Polar Force " exercise
is taking place this week. HF/VHF/UHF is really
hopping (tempting to call in sick for work ;)
Limiting myself to just fm or am monitoring
in the vhf/uhf & microwave spectrum is a handicap.
Quickly discovered after getting the R8500
using both ssb and wideband am & fm, systematically
sweeping through the spectrum. Reveals a host
of unusual widebandwidth digital modes (vhf, uhf
and low microwave) that was otherwise going
unoticed on my part. Which in turn steers me
to monitor other "related" frequencies for
narrow bandwidth activity.
Once one travels a short distance from both
Fairbanks and Anchorage areas, the population
drops to nil. Hence no local commerical fm
broadcast stns to swamp a optoelectronics scout.
Those babies work beautifully in this enviroment.
Amazing the comm facilities one runs across
quietly tucked away in wilderness areas (aircraft
only access).
Well I'm starting to ramble away at the keyboard
again Scott, thanks for the response om!
