Camden County's 9-1-1 system will soon receive new hardware and programming
to solve a communications problem between some police stations. The upgrade will
specifically affect Camden and Cherry Hill's police departments, which
communicate on different frequencies than the rest of the county.Currently, police
officers in the two communities can't speak directly to counterparts in
surrounding towns. So, if a Camden or Cherry Hill officer chases a suspect into
Collingswood, he cannot quickly call for local backup, and vice versa."It's not
only a safety issue for the public, it's a safety issue for the police as well,"
Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi said Monday. The $50,000 patch
upgrade should link the county's two largest police departments to the Central
Communications Center in Lindenwold by late January.
