most of the county's approximately 92 fire companies do not have the costly 
radio equipment needed to take advantage of the system.
The county this week purchased two radios and microphones that are compatible 
with the system for the county sheriff's department at an approximate cost of 
$10,000.
Having invested almost $20 million ($17 million in actual costs and $3 
million in debt service for the borrowing of these funds) for the improvements, the 
commissioners said the firefighting units should not look to the county to 
purchase their radio equipment.
