I flipped on the scanner today to listen to what was going on with the incredible winds we had here in west central Indiana......locally gusts may have exceeded 60 MPH. When that got boring, I went back to the generally military half of the scanner to see if anything unusual might crop up there.
Most of the evening 351.95 was VERY active, and it sounded like it was all civilian traffic related to Chicago center and likely enroute comms. Mostly it was calls for "climb and maintain" to flight levels 260 through 380 and "descend and maintain" to flight levels 190 through 240. Civil airline calls United, American, etc. Controller also was handing off to frequencies for Chicago Center, Indianapolis Center and I heard one for Kansas City Center.
On my rather ancient listing, I had the freq listed as "unknown". Also had limited traffic on 118.4 weak and couldn't make it out, same with 255.4 which I showed as "National Guard Ch. 12".
I probably would not have mentioned it at all but these are freqs that to the best of my knowledge I have never heard ANYthing on before out of about 160+ that I have programmed in. Odder still is that after having moved across town last August I have no antennas up yet, so this was picked
up on the scanners telescoping whip only, all maybe 2 feet of it. Mostly I didn't feel that I heard ANY aircraft on 351.95, only that controller.
I wondered about atmospheric oddities given the funky weather system but I would have thought that some of the other stuff I had programmed in would have opened up as well. Anybody got clue on what was going on with this?
Duane
