[ScanIndiana] trunking

Ok so I am new to this and from what I have read the only female in here....sorry fellas but I have an intrest... :) 

So my question....what exactly is trunking? I have just gotten my first scanner from my mother who recently passed away and it is a bearcat. I am not sure if that matters or not but I keep seeing the whole "trunking" and I just do not understand. Will my scanner still work when this goes into effect?
