An external speaker is, almost universally, always an improvement in the
audio over the internal speaker of any radio. Most hand-held radios and even many
mobile/base radios, however, have a series resistor to the earphone jack to
prevent hearing damage from an audio blast when you first plug it in. Thus,
the external audio jack will not provide sufficient audio to an external
SPEAKER. Even without that resistor, hand helds seldom have enough audio power to
properly drive a larger speaker, let alone to sufficient volume in a car.
Perhaps the best accessory after the external antenna is an external,
amplified speaker. Many Motorola and GE amplified speakers can be had for $10 or $15
complete (including cigarette lighter plug for power) at Hamfests. ($25 new
at RS.) Non-amplified speakers range from $2 used to $5 new.
The issue is not that you need 7 or 10 watts (rated at 10% THD, or Total
Harmonic Distortion) of audio in a car at full volume, but the 1 or 2 watts you
really do need to overcome road noise will be virtually distortion free (down
towards 1 or 2%). THIS alone is worth the investment on ANY scanner to improve
the audio.
