Just did a three part article for Scanning USA Magazine on the Nextel
system. After some heavy research, I came to the conclusion that a nextel
scanner is very possible, and (like anything else) can be produced if the
demand is high enough.
In fact, service monitors that are capable of monitoring the nextel
systems are already available, although the cost of these is a bit...
well... interesting ;-)
The threat to the hobby that these nextels present is very real and quite
scary. I live in a small town, and all of the local government (and 3 of
the 4 local businesses) have all but abandoned their older systems, in
favor of Nextel. Even the local police use them now in lieu of a private
VHF channel.
Nextel scanners are possible. Letting the manufacturers know that the
demand is there is the real issue.
